Watch Kelly Clarkson Put Soulful Twist On Jaw-Dropping Metallica Cover

Kelly Clarkson has been known to take on rock songs during the "Kellyoke" segment of The Kelly Clarkson Show and slayed a cover of Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" a couple years ago, but no one could've guessed she'd go full-metal with a Metallica cover.

The American Idol alum chose "Sad But True" for her Kellyoke song on Monday (May 6) and put a soulful twist on the Black Album classic. The song almost sounded unrecognizable before the iconic chorus, and even though Clarkson's voice is a little smoother than Metallica frontman James Hetfield's, she still absolutely crushed the vocals and showcased her monstrous vocal range. Her backing band also looked super into it, so we wouldn't be surprised if more metal songs get selected in the future.

The Kelly Clarkson Show shared the performance on YouTube, and Metallica fans showed their love in the comments, while others campaigned for a Kelly Clarkson metal cover album.

"Metallica and kelly should be on the superbowl halftime show," one person wrote.

"Kelly needs to put out a metal cover album," commented a fan. "This was amazing."

Metallica are gearing up to bring their "M72" world tour back to North America this summer. See a full list of tour dates here and see Clarkson's jaw-dropping cover of "Sad But True" below.
